Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has mandated the immediate dissolution of all special police units and squads across the country as part of a comprehensive restructuring initiative aimed at reforming the Nigeria Police Force.
The units affected by this decision include:
- Rapid Response Squad (RRS)
- Anti-Cultism
- Anti-Kidnapping
- Scorpion Squad
- Tactical Intelligence Response Squad (TIRS)
- Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT)
- Monitoring Units
- Tiger Squad
- Gender Units
- Anti-Robbery Squads
Members of these units, according to the IGP will be reassigned to standard policing roles, which encompass patrol and guard duties, the Divisional Crime Branch (DCB), the Juvenile and Women Centre (JWC), and general beat assignments.
This decision is viewed as a response to public concerns regarding human rights violations, extortion, and extrajudicial actions by certain tactical units. The IGP has highlighted professionalism, accountability, and collaboration with the community as fundamental elements of the reform.
