The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has declared a three-day mourning period following the deaths of over thirty individuals while in custody at the NSCDC Minna Command in Niger State on September 17, 2026.

Reports indicate that the Commandant General has mandated that all NSCDC flags nationwide be flown at half-mast in memory of the deceased. Additionally, the Anambra State Command has expressed its solidarity with the nation in mourning this tragic loss.

In response to the incident involving suspected illegal miners who died while detained, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi has instructed all NSCDC units across the country to lower their flags for three days to honor the victims.

Following this directive, the Anambra State Command, led by Comdt. Maku Olatunde, has ordered that flags be flown at half-mast at the State Command Headquarters, Area Commands, Divisional Offices, and all other facilities in Anambra State from September 20 to September 23, 2026, to signify collective mourning and support.

This is a challenging and somber time for the entire Corps. While words may not alleviate the sorrow of the bereaved families, we extend our sincere condolences to those who have lost loved ones, to the Government and residents of Niger State, and to all Nigerians impacted by this sorrowful event.

We pray that the Almighty grants strength to the families and friends of the departed as they cope with this irreplaceable loss, and we wish a swift recovery to the survivors.

In a statement from Command Spokesperson SC Okadigbo Edwin, Comdt. Maku Olatunde noted the Corps’ profound regret over the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to the value of human life, while assuring support for the thorough investigation called for by the Federal Government through the Honourable Minister of Interior.
