Four days after Bishop Emeka Nwankpa was released on bail for allegations involving fraudulent miracles, the same court, under Justice Jude Obiora, has also granted bail to seven other clerics who had been arrested and remanded in Federal Correctional Centers alongside Nwankpa.
This ruling, made as the Court resumed in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, represents a significant turn in a widely publicized legal case that has drawn considerable attention both locally and beyond.
According to a report by 247wisemen.com’s judiciary correspondent in Awka, the clerics were granted bail on generous terms, allowing them to stay free pending the continuation of their trial. They are facing accusations for allegedly breaching certain provisions of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law, which has ignited extensive debate about their roles in the religious community.
During the bail hearing, the court approved each request, setting a bail amount of One Million Naira for each defendant. The conditions necessitate each to secure a surety who must provide proof of income, a passport photo, three months of utility invoices, and an affidavit proving means of livelihood. Additionally, the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, with the responsibility of verifying residency resting on the defendants’ legal counsel, among other conditions.
The ruling was met with enthusiasm from the clerics’ supporters, many of whom were present at the court. Legal experts see this as a pivotal moment in a case that has garnered significant public focus.
“This is a critical juncture in the judicial process, although essential issues remain that the court has yet to settle,” noted a legal observer in attendance.
The case has sparked extensive discussion, particularly within the religious community, with many awaiting further updates and the court’s final decision. Supporters of the released clerics remain optimistic about the judicial process as the trial advances, with the next hearing scheduled for July 3rd, 2026.
As the legal proceedings unfold, attention remains fixed on the courtroom, where further arguments and evidence from both the public and the Anambra State Homeland Security operatives, known as Agunechemba, are anticipated to play a role in deciding the fate of the clerics involved.
Last Friday, eight Pentecostal pastors accused of being involved in fraudulent activities and brought before the Awka High Court in Anambra State were remanded in Federal Correctional Centers alongside Bishop Nwankpa.
Prior to their arrest by Agunechemba operatives, Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo highlighted during a church service in Awka that some alleged fake pastors were being held for actions deemed inappropriate for representatives of God.
In light of the State Security laws, numerous traditional healers have protested, arguing that the government is enacting selective justice, claiming that the actual sources of power for these false pastors originate from them. They questioned why their peers faced arrest while their clients (the pastors) remained unscathed, prompting increased government scrutiny of certain pastoral activities.
Nevertheless, the accused fake pastors are facing legal consequences for allegedly violating the 2025 Homeland Security Law of the state, which was enacted in February 2025, and limits specific religious practices considered detrimental to public welfare, particularly in relation to unlawful wealth acquisition.
Among those now in court are Peter Chukwu, Chinedu Egwuonwu, Bishop Emeka Nwankpa, Ebele Nnachukwu, Ekeleme Chris Ugochukwu, Ndubisi Nnachukwu, Miracle Iruoma, and Chukwukadibia Ogwuama.
