Eastland Electricity Distribution Limited (EEDL) has reported the successful trial and conviction of a transformer vandal in Ebonyi State, calling the verdict a significant advancement in combating the vandalism of electrical infrastructure.
This announcement was made on Wednesday in Abakaliki by EEDL’s Head of Communications, Mrs. Patience Ezeagu.
She stated that on May 6, 2026, the High Court in Afikpo found Ikechukwu Osondu guilty of vandalizing a public electricity transformer in the Afikpo region of Ebonyi State. The court convicted him under the Ebonyi State Miscellaneous Offences Law of 2018 and sentenced him to five years in prison with no option for a fine.
Mrs. Ezeagu noted that the suspect’s apprehension resulted from reliable intelligence and teamwork between community vigilantes and security agencies, while EEDL’s legal team worked diligently to conclude the case successfully.
“This conviction serves as a stern notice to anyone involved in damaging electricity installations, as these facilities are vital national assets intended to serve communities and aid economic growth. Destruction of such assets not only harms customers but also hinders development,” she stated.
She also recalled that earlier this year, the company expressed concerns regarding the increasing incidences of vandalism at substations throughout Ebonyi State, which led to power outages and considerable financial losses.
EEDL’s purpose in Ebonyi State is to promote development through enhanced power supply, support local businesses, and improve residents’ quality of life. However, she cautioned that these goals might not be achieved if vandalism persists.
“We are dedicated to enhancing power supply and expanding our network, but ongoing vandalism jeopardizes these endeavors. We remain committed to collaborating with security forces, community leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure that offenders are apprehended and prosecuted,” she added.
EEDL also urged community leaders, youth organizations, neighborhood watch groups, and residents to take responsibility for the electricity installations in their areas by staying vigilant and reporting any suspicious activities related to transformers and other electrical facilities.
The company reassured customers of its commitment to improving service delivery and ensuring that anyone guilty of vandalizing power facilities is dealt with according to the law.
