Senator Engr. Kenneth Emeka Eze, representing the Ebonyi Center Senatorial District and chairing the Senate Committee on Water Resources and Sanitation, has called for prompt, innovative policies to address Nigeria’s worsening water quality challenges, which are intensified by climate change.

Speaking at the 2026 Annual Water Quality Conference in Abuja, hosted by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, Senator Eze underscored the significance of the theme “Water Quality in a Changing Climate: Policies, Innovation and Practice.”

In a statement from Hon Kizito Nwankwo, a Senior Legislative Aide to Senator Eze, the senator pointed out the harmful impacts of climate change on freshwater resources, such as rising temperatures, greater pollutant concentrations during droughts, and increased runoff due to extreme weather—all of which pose risks to public health, food security, and sustainable development.

While recognizing the importance of existing frameworks like the National Water Policy and ongoing WASH and urban water reforms, he stressed the pressing need for improved interventions. Senator Eze advocated for the adoption of cutting-edge technologies, including solar-powered water treatment systems and advanced filtration, complemented by stricter regulations, community engagement, and data-informed oversight.

He reaffirmed the National Assembly’s dedication to promoting policies, legislation, and funding that aim to enhance water quality and ensure safe water access for all citizens.

In conclusion, he encouraged attendees to leverage the conference as a venue to formulate practical, collaborative solutions for achieving sustainable and accessible water for every Nigerian.
