Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, a Nigerian human rights lawyer and chief legal representative for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has expressed his admiration for Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu for implementing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement released on Wednesday, titled “Midweek Musings: Tiger Base, Owerri, The Eye of the Storm: Restructuring Tactical Units Across the State, Among Other Reforms, as a Transformative Tempest Unleashed by IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, Heralding the Long-Awaited Rebirth of the Nigeria Police Force,” Ejiofor remarked that IGP Disu has shown a willingness and determination to lead change. He praised the current leadership for acting swiftly, a notable difference from previous administrations.
Ejiofor highlighted that significant reforms have been initiated in a very short time, surpassing public expectations. He observed a positive shift in the reputation of infamous units like Tiger Base, Owerri, which are currently undergoing restructuring.
He suggested that if this momentum is maintained, without the usual political disruptions, the Nigeria Police Force could achieve a significant restoration of its public image over the next year. What Disu needs now, according to Ejiofor, is not skepticism, but supportive encouragement from the public, as true reform, although long overdue, is attainable.
Ejiofor pointed out a prevailing belief among the public that confidence in the Nigeria Police Force has significantly diminished. He acknowledged that while there exists the potential for the police leadership to rehabilitate their tarnished image into a respected and professional entity, the political will to do so had previously been lacking.
He described the sweeping changes championed by IGP Disu as transformative, emphasizing that his leadership reflects a focused and strategic approach.
Ejiofor reflected on past incidents where egregious abuses occurred within police ranks, particularly in notorious zones that inflicted serious harm without accountability, contrasting this past with the current reforms. The response to public grievances has notably shifted, suggesting that the current leadership is genuinely attentive to the concerns raised.
He referenced past neglect of serious allegations against police officers and the lack of accountability resulting from institutional complacency, highlighting a stark change in the present leadership’s responsiveness.
Ejiofor concluded by urging IGP Disu to stay committed to his reform efforts, acknowledging the challenges ahead but encouraging perseverance.
He underlined the need for accountability for past offenses and emphasized that true reform must not overlook justice. Ultimately, the efforts for change in the police force, he believes, can pave the way for lasting institutional credibility.
