Mr. Izuchukwu Ibekailo, known as Osisikankwu, the Chairman of the Scrap Automobile Metal Market in Obolo Obosi and the state Coordinator for scrap dealers, has committed to closely monitoring scrap dealers in Anambra State and enforcing regulations to prevent vandalism of government property.
He aims to eliminate illegal scrap dealers and protect public facilities from deterioration under the guise of waste collection, as well as mitigate any hazardous activities conducted by scavengers that threaten public health and the environment.
Speaking with our correspondent in Onitsha, he mentioned that he plans to compile a registry of all scrap dealers in the state to facilitate better oversight.
Recently appointed by the Anambra State government as the Coordinator of Scrap Dealers, Mr. Ibekailo expressed his intention to collaborate with enforcement bodies, such as the OCHA Brigade, Udo-Ga-Chi security, and the police, to ensure the smooth operation of the scrap business.
He refuted claims that all scrap and waste dealers engage in criminal behavior, explaining that the actions of a few criminals and scavengers tarnish the reputation of legitimate scrap dealers by dealing in stolen public and private property under the pretext of scrap collection. He cautioned those involved in such illegal activities to find alternative means of income or face serious consequences.
“Scrap dealing is a legitimate business. It’s these desperate scavengers and criminals who are damaging our image,” he stated.
He emphasized that sellers at the Automobile Metal Market, Obolo Obosi, must be identifiable and must prove ownership of any scrap materials before transactions are approved.
Mr. Ibekailo assured that he would adopt similar measures in overseeing scrap dealers across Anambra to dissociate the industry from theft and criminality.
“Before dismantling any vehicle, we verify the vehicle’s documentation to ensure the seller is the genuine owner, as we do not engage with stolen items under the guise of scrap business.
“My appointment as the coordinator by Hon. Commissioner for Environment Clems Aguiyi aims to combat criminality in this sector and restore a positive image for those in the industry. We have operational teams monitoring dealer activities,” he said.
In terms of generating revenue for the state through the scrap business, Osisikankwu pointed out his efforts to ensure all market dealers pay their taxes to state and local government authorities. As the coordinator, he intends to ensure this continues as it is crucial for governmental development and infrastructure projects.
“Anambra State is our collective responsibility. We aspire to build a new Anambra that we can all take pride in.
“I will leverage my position to help restore dignity to those in the scrap business, allowing them to take pride in their work and dissociate from criminality,” he concluded.
