We have prominent traditional rulers like the Ooni of Ife and the Sultan of Sokoto. Regardless of our opinions about them, it’s important to recognize that they hold a distinguished position among traditional leaders in their areas, akin to central stars amongst other celestial bodies that may shine less brightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his time as Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi recognized this necessity for the East to have its own representative star. Fortunately, that star was already shining brightly in the form of the Obi of Onitsha. Beyond the prominence of the title itself, the individual in the role is remarkable in many ways. Mr. Obi then acknowledged this by appointing him as the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, a role he maintained throughout Obi\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, the Obi celebrated his 85th birthday.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was heartening to see Nigerians from all around the globe express their admiration for him on this occasion. I was especially pleased to note that Governor Alex Otti from the South-East took the initiative to honor him appropriately. Ideally, the South-East would have coordinated a collective recognition, but it’s often the case that such efforts fall short. When will we start coming together to honor our leaders? How we regard our own reflects how others view us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On behalf of many who appreciate tradition and cultural respect, we express our gratitude to Governor Otti for his commendable gesture. It has been troubling to see His Majesty attending state events without proper protocol recognition\u2014an oversight that is either negligent or intentionally misleading and that should concern us more than it does. This lack of acknowledgment has largely gone unnoticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, Agbogidi, stands out as an extraordinary traditional leader who adds vibrancy to our historical narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tall and dignified, he exudes majesty effortlessly. Unlike many traditional leaders who may engage in rivalries, he commands respect through quiet authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before becoming Obi, Agbogidi had already distinguished himself through his education at esteemed institutions like Stanford University, where he earned a Master’s in Engineering, and Columbia University, where he received an MBA, following a foundation in Chemical Engineering. His career in the oil and gas sector with Shell International spanned both Nigeria and the UK, showcasing his international expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He held various strategic positions, including corporate planning and external relations, eventually attaining senior executive roles within Shell Nigeria. By his retirement in 2002, he had established a strong reputation for discipline, competence, and effective administration at one of the world\u2019s leading multinational companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was from this wealth of global experience and strong leadership that he accepted the role of Obi of Onitsha. While some jokingly refer to him as \u201cOgbu mmadu mgbe ndo na-aso ya \u1ecds\u1ecd,\u201d I am reassured that this is meant affectionately and should not be taken literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His prominence comes from more than just his education and professional success; it stems from his integrity, steadfast character, and the confidence he instills in those around him. He is respected as someone untouched by corruption and the ethical compromises often found in public life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His manners and presence reflect an unparalleled nobility, and he embodies a rare combination of tradition and modern excellence\u2014demonstrating that culture can thrive while maintaining grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I think of Agbogidi, I recall the words of the Roman historian Suetonius about a Gaul who, initially intent on killing Augustus Caesar, found himself disarmed upon encountering the emperor\u2019s calm and dignified presence. This same impression arises when one considers Agbogidi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some individuals demand attention through loud displays or intimidation. In contrast, others command respect effortlessly just by their presence, and Agbogidi is among those rare individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Okey Ikechukwu\u2019s description of the Ijele masquerade captures this essence beautifully. Within Igbo culture, the Ijele is not just a masquerade; it symbolizes serene, self-contained majesty. Unlike other masquerades that seek applause, the Ijele\u2019s authority is inherent, demanding respect without needing external validation. This highlights a fundamental truth: genuine greatness doesn’t seek affirmation; it simply exists, and circumstances align accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this way, Agbogidi embodies the spirit of the Ijele. He exudes calm authority, diffusing tensions rather than escalating them. Even in ceremonial occasions, he maintains a composed presence, as if nature itself is showing through his demeanor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Agbogidi, the external and internal harmonize rather than compete. His calm is an inherent quality; his dignity is not merely exhibited but is part of his being. What we see in him is merely a reflection of his inner self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 85, Agbogidi transcends aging to become a lasting symbol.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
